How Radio Winchcombe began
It was on 26th January 2005 that a group of people interested in the idea of a community radio station in Winchcombe met at The Youth Centre in Gretton Road.
Apparently Councillor Ron Allen heard of a small grant being available from the Arts Council to start projects like this. A successful bid was made, and with the aid of local sponsors and a lot of help from Roger Dury and other members of The Forest of Dean Community Radio, Radio Winchcombe managed to get on air with two days of programmes in April.
The two days of broadcasting were on 22nd and 23rd April, with fifteen hours of programmes each day. The whole project was a complete success with people from all age groups making programmes. Local schools, churches, and other organisations also made programmes. Mike Rafferty who lives in Winchcombe, wrote a drama about the local tobacco riots that took place in the seventeenth century.
On the receiving end, local people of all ages enjoyed listening to the programmes. An enormous amount of positive feedback was received, especially from housebound members of the community.
